Silver (Chandi) - The Story
Silver or Argentum is the whitest and most reflective of all metals. The history of silver dates back to 4th millennium BC. In the early days, silver was used as a currency in Mesopotamia and at certain times in history, silver was valued more than gold due to its lustrous finish and versatile applications.
Silver rarely occurs in its pure metallic state and has to be extracted from ores. Historically, silver jewelry served as a mark of privileged position for the possessor. It was also believed that silver brings wealth, prosperity, and good luck to its possessor.
Pure silver is precious, but too soft to use in jewelry. Therefore, Silver 925 which contains 92.5% pure silver, and 7.5% metal alloy is considered the global standard for use in jewelry. Silver 925 is hypoallergenic and has the strength to maintain its shape over time.
Since silver oxidizes easily, it needs to be protected. We protect of our silver jewelry from oxidization by covering it with a thin layer of rhodium or gold. This helps in maintaining the shine of your jewelry for a longer period and prevents the jewelry from being scratched easily.
